Felt nauseous and dizzy

I just started massage school about 2 weeks ago and now practicing on my husband. I was practicing last night and actually couldn't finish because all of sudden I felt nauseous and dizzy. The technique I was practicing was Vibrational Healing Massage. I have knowledge about energy and have had energy work done so I know what comes up with it. I was working really hard on his calf b/c he expressed that they were feeling pretty tight and could use some loosening up. This was towards the end of the session. It was when I was working on his toes that I started to feel a wave of nausea. Then it got more intense when I moved to his head to work on his neck. I told him I had to stop.

Of course, not thinking of this initially, before the session he lit some incense (which at the time I didn't think was a huge deal). We began to believe that it must've been the incense but also know that people can take on others energy which in his case maybe was some stuck energy. I do remember feeling weird after working on his calf before going to his toes hence that's when the real nausea kicked in.

I know I may be reading into it a lot but I wanted to see if others on this tribe can relate.

Thanks,
;-) Liz

I forgot to mention that once this all went away, for the rest of the night, I had a headache and body aches almost flu-like. I woke up fine but just a little more tired than usual.

      Hi Liz,

I had similar reactions when I was learning, and now, being worked on by Thai traditional massage students can bring on a variety of malaise. Grounding afterward is important- some tools in my kit are keeping a bowl salt nearby to dip my hands in. Any of the elements can ground and dissipate energy- metal, water, wood, rock, earth etc. A noble tree down the street does it for me, I place my hands, or back against the trunk. One of my teachers, Asokananda taught me the pranic egg exercise which is a yoga visualization that I use before starting any hands on work. And the classic- wash hands thoroughly. But check your body position cutting off circulation, that is a problem my students have, and breathe deeply, always

I'm assuming you were not using a vibrating device.?
Vibration (manual or mechanical) can affect the practitioners central nervous system. Much like a construction worker using a jackhammer; to much vibration can over stimulate and even damage (2 hours per day) the nerves.
Beyond that, a common mistake using vibration is to hold the breath. Doing a great deal of vibration can be fatiguing, especially when you are learning. Bad form (too much effort) can overuse your muscles.
Combining fatigue with holding the breath and you've got yourself an invitation to meet the floor.
I'm curious about the technique/modality you were using. I use vibration locally for small areas of the body, but if I'm going to work large areas or for long periods using vibration, I think it's better to use a mechanical device like a thumper or other tool.
I'm guessing you feel better now, but how long did your symptoms last?

There are no devices used for this modality. It works a lot with energy, but in the first level (and there are 4 levels) it deals mostly with the physical body. Level 2 goes into emotional release; level 3 is chakra balancing and level 4 is shock and trauma. 3 and 4 are "hands-off" techniques dealing with energy. It's based on the Fluid Body Model which means that our bodies are more fluid than solid. It helps restore fluid back into the joints and the whole body. you can check out my school's website (posted on another thread) www.worldschoolmassage.com.

Patricia Cramer invented this technique about 25 years ago. I guess with the vibration aspect, it is individual. I know in my case there was definitely something happening in my husband's calf muscle that my body was responding to or just sensitive to. I also know that I wasn't taking deep breaths or grounding into my feet which a few of my instructors advised me to do. It was a great learning experience and now when I practice on people, I'm fully aware of my breath and grounding myself which is so key when giving bodywork. Thanks for your response!

There have been times I've felt pain in certain areas of peoples body. I contributed that to picking up on a persons stuck energy. I always ground myself before & after a session. I cleanse the air with a light sage smudging frequently. Keeping fit(exercise, meditation, self care), and eating healthy(whole foods organic diet) is crucial. I even stopped drinking to keep my energy field clear...first for myself, but also for those I'm helping.
